View Full Version : Outdoor/Indoor Hibernation?

I'm in the process of putting together a Tegu project, but the question of hibernation has come up. I'm building an outdoor enclosure, but it utilizes an existing concrete slab so there is no area for the Tegus to dig down and hibernate. My question is will I be able to bring the Tegus (Argentine Reds) in the garage to complete their hibernation when the weather dictates. I keep my garage in the upper 60's all winter with a floor temp of 60-65.

I've thought about using cover stock tanks for this purpose. I could fill them with hay or leaves to allow them to dig down.

My other idea is to put a squat, insulated, hutch at the end of each run. I could set a compact heat source in each (shielded of course) with a line voltage thermostat set at 50 degrees F.

I want to breed these wonderful animals and understand that hibernation is imperative to success so I don't want to mess it up.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
