First I would like to say that I recommend bringing the Tegu to the Vet as soon as you can. Here are some infos on how you can treat a prolapse. I would talk to the vet about this treatment and see if he/she will agree with it. The Tegu in this video is not mine. But when my Argentine b/w Tegu ( Leonidas ) had a prolapse when he was a baby because he was impacted my vet gave me this medicine to put on the vent. The vets also call this medicine liquid gold because it can be used for a lot off different things and it has no experation date ( prolapse, cut .... but NOT orally ). Not every Tegu needs a surgery when he/she has a prolaps.

Meds. info. You also can use this medicine for open wounds ( not orally ). I used it on my Tegu's nose rub and it heald very well. My vet gave it to me.

This is a video on how you can put the meds on a smaller Tegu. This is one of my female Tegu's who was impacted and I wanted to lubricate the vent so it will not tear when whe poops out the object ( it was a plastic cap from a door stopper )

txrepgirl, thank you for gathering all this helpful info in one place.

Can I add a few comments to the series of videos from that English/Australian guy (he is a hero for posting such helpful information)?

* Although he says to use Vasoline as an emergency moisturizer on the protruding tissue, a better choice is K-Y jelly. This is a safe, water-based lubricant (Vasoline is petroleum-based) that is what is used, for example, when a doctor needs to lubricate an enema tube. I won't elaborate, but lets say it is designed to be used safely on internal orifices -- Vasoline's package warns specifically NOT to use internally.

* The guy says to keep the container temps around 80 degrees F, to be sure the animal doesn't get too active. We learned from hard experience that this is probably too cool if the lizard is going to be in there for more than a few hours. Every lizard is different (because of size and species) but 90 degrees is what our vet recommended, and our boy did not get active at that temp. He did not have a prolapse, but we used a similar therapeutic humidor setup when he had a very bad retained shed, so he was in for many hours every evening for over a week. At 80 degrees, he started to develop a respiratory infection.

* In the episode where he talks about the sugar-water bath, he gives a proportion of sugar to water in the text description. If anyone reading this sees a veterinarian because of their tegu's prolapse, I wish they would check that proportion with the vet to verify that it is optimal. Sometimes things work anecdotally and we read it on the Web, but there may be improved information out there that can be validated more scientifically in order to prevent some more subtle problem from developing. It would be great if others could add to these instructions with professional info.

Also, that is so important that txrepgirl started out saying to get the tegu to a vet. If you don't have an experienced herpetological veterinarian near you, don't be shy about taking in the links txrepgirl posted to whatever vet you find. They may respond to the information with their special background and training, or it may prompt them to check specific research to which they have access.
