for my tegu, just wandering what the difference is.
I don't use it,.. as long as they have a light with uvb and or access to natural sunlight, with enough calcium, powder form or natural you should be fine.
Since too much Vitamin D in the system can be just as bad as not enough. It can damage kidneys, blood vessels and cause soft tissue calcification's.
oh ok cool, i have uv so ill just get some calcium without d3
I supplement with D3. Right now my calcium does not have D3 so I am using a separate D. If you use cod liver oil, you are already supplementing with D, so more is not needed. I just like to cover my bases so I add a bit once or twice monthl.
Not enough means that calcium is not utilized properly, leading to soft bones. Vitamin D is also being looked at for playing a role in mood function in humans...not sure how that plays out in reptiles. It is also being investigated for ties into glucose metablosim. Although it is possible to overdose on Vit D, I think the deficiencies are much more common. But if the diet contains sufficient sources of Vit D and the UVB source is excellent, then supplementation should be seldom, if ever needed.
I use http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2752427 solar drops(only one drop a week), and a UVB light, and also dust his crickets WITH D3 but he doesn't get crickets to often. He goes outside about 30 mins about 4-5 times a week.
Would this be to much? I am so scared of MBD but I'm also scared I'm over doing it.
Vitamin D3 of itself does NOT lead to soft tissue calcification. This usually arises when people go overboard on D3 and calcium supplementation. Exposure to UVB is evidently safer than oral supplementation with D3 because it appears that reptiles are able to physiologically regulate Vitamin D3 production from sunlight exposure, but not through oral assimilation (there isn't anything concrete on this, but this is what the sketchy data available seems to indicate). Right now, considering the issues you are having with diet and proper nutrient balance, it would be advisable to include vitamin D3 in your supplementation regime than to deny it.
