Are you planning on using substrate?
The "giants" and Black and whites are the same species. There is no guarantee what size one will get, but if you build an enclosure with the expectations of having to house a 4.5' lizard and you...
Now I know why I stay away from this forum.
So as you can see my first post did just as you say, I asked how the topic of species got brought into the thread.
Where did I personally attack someone?
So what you are saying is that all Tegus that fall under Merianae are the same? It seems you came in this thread to "show off" your supposed expertise. The OP asked what type of tegu he had, others...
How did the topic of species/sub species even get brought up in this thread?
The only "morph" available in the Tegu world is the albino. Everything else would be locality differences, not morphs....
Drylok, its a masonry sealant. It can be found in the paint section at Home Depot and Lowes.
Looks like an Anery with a cool pattern. It is not a true "red tail".
You must be looking at the wrong thing. A 96"x36"x30" Melamine cage is only $500. You might have looked at the PVC cages, but it is a 96"x24"x14" for $700.
This is like saying why does my dog's poop stink, it is poop from a large lizard, it isn't going to smell good. How big is he? Why are you not using substrate? What is the humidity in the room? ...
2.5' is not deep enough for them. They generally get about 4' long.
Monitors and tegus have different dietary needs.
Monitors need whole prey, roaches and crickets dusted with calcium, mice, rats, chicks, etc.
Tegus need a varied diet, crickets, roaches, misc...
Get yourself a temp gun to check basking temps. I wouldn't be surprised if you are around 115 and your probe therm is just not reading correctly.
Is the bulb a PowerSun MVB? If so something doesn't seem right. I have a 100w powersun about 14" from the basking spot and get temps of 110-115. I also have a 125w solarglo in another enclosure...
I was using Cypress, but it gets expensive considering it is hard to find in Las Vegas. I now use a sand/soil mix and it works much better in my opinion. Holds a burrow better and holds moisture...
Here is my 2010 All American at about 10 months old and 39", he is now 11 months and 40". He is the only Tegu I have ever had so I don't have anything to compare temperament wise. He is pretty good...
What are you feeding them? What are the temps and humidity in the enclosure? Are you keeping them together in one 40 gallon?
Boamaster.com has some cages that would work for adult Tegus if you don't have a way to build your own.
What about posting you location and seeing if someone on here is close to you that could help you out. Otherwise truck rental would probably be the most economic route.
Where can you get bone meal from?
I picked up a few $25 humidifiers from Walgreens that work very well. I have one for my Tegu, Rhino Iguana, and both monitor cages.
...
If you don't plan on stacking anything on top of it 1/2" will be fine, you may want to use 3/4" for the floor to support the substrate. You can also tint the Drylok to get a specific color if you...
I recommend Drylok as well, it is awesome stuff. My cage is water tight, and the stuff has a rough finish that is awesome.
Awesome work. I just don't think I have the patience for that. What is the stuff called that you used?
