Default Reds VS. Black & Whites

I went into a little reptile store in town today that I like to go in every couple of weeks or so to see what new animals they got in. It is an old house that was converted into a store front. The animals aren't taken very good care of, most of their reptiles are in cages that are WAY too small and very filthy with cob webs and dried up poo and food in most of the cages. But it's the only shop that sells exotics besides Petco so I like to look around. I went up to the front to ask the shop owner if he had any tegu book and he replied "No, but there is books on monitors and they're kept the same way". Then he ask what kind of tegu I am getting and I reply "An Argentine Black and white tegu" and he said "Reds are nicer" and he started to walk away then I replied " Well, it depends on who's opinion" then he turned around and looked at me like I was challenging him and said "Well, I have had several of both and reds are nicer". Then he walks away again. Well, I'm not going in there again. I've heard it both ways but I think it depends more on the individual. So guys what has a better temperament? Reds or Blanks & Whites? I would love to hear your thoughts!

I'd say it's the same.. it just depends on the way the animal is treated.
He probably just preferred the reds over the B&W's so they ended up nicer.

Yeah, that is what I thought. He just made me so grumpy, you just don't treat a customer like that.

I agree. It depends on how you care for it. If he keeps his B&W's "like monitors" I don't think he is an authority on the subject.

I would expect much in the way of consideration or niceties from someone who doesn't treat the animals he's in charge off with the same decency. How you treat your animals is very important as it reflects your care for customer satisfaction.

Yeah, I never buy anything from there because I really don't want to endorse there business but I have been looking for a tegu book so I thought I might try my luck. I just wish there was something local with exotics but I will just have to stick with Petco lol I guess he thought scene he owned an exotics shop he was automatically an authority and his word was law :/ Anyone from Oregon know a good reptile store let me know!

I never had a 100% red before but I would say it all depence on the owner on how he raises the Tegu.

Both of my reds have been skittish, but they also had questionable backgrounds and I didn't raise them from hatchlings.

There are not many books on tegu care.

i'd have to say i got a red & a black/white from the same kid (i say kid cuz he was a 19yr old child) both kept same way same food same everything, but the red (penny) was way more troublesome than the B/W (Liz). but i also have a B/W (Harley) that is/can be WAY Worse than Penny, but Mr Satan (my male red) can be grumpier than Harley.

All in all they are about the same, but i do think (ONLY MY OPINION) Reds can be more skittish than B/W
