Default Looking to rescue a tegu

Hi, I found a tegu for sale in Canada, unfortunatly the animal is undoubtly in bad shape due of the information given by the owner about how he took care of the animal.

    Here are the info :
    Argentine Black and white tegu
    Age: 3 years old
    Size : 20 inches
    Temperature 20-25 Degree Celcius
Feeding schedule : 1 adult mice per 2 weeks
Cage size : 36x12x15 inches, doesn't need a bigger cage because it will grow only to the size of his cage.
Price : 220$ (Tegu, cage, mice and mice cage included)

Take note, that I am only interested in the tegu, I already have a 4x2x2 cage ready for him. So I'll try to deal only the lizard to 50$ to rescue this poor little guy/girl.

I need to know, if I get a tegu that size, will it grow to a normal size if I feed them correctly compared to this ignorant keeper or he will stay that size forever?

    Thank you
    Ben

I hope you can rescue this poor animal. Sorry I don't have the knowledge to say for certain, but I would think once he is given decent care this tegu should grow quite a bit. I would imagine he will always be stunted somewhat due to not putting on bone mass from his first years, but I'm guessing he won't stay that little forever. Good luck!

BTW, in case anyone misunderstands, the ad that Ben is quoting has VERY WRONG information about correct temperature, feeding and nonsense about the cage size limiting the animal's growth. The lizard is stunted because of the feeding and temperature (and likely improper UVB). There is no truth to the myth that reptiles only grow as big as the enclosure they're given--FALSE!

The red tegu I have now came from a situation like that. He grow a bit more, but will never reach the full size one would expect. Still, he is a pretty good size. I think it depends on any skeletal deformities that would prevent further growth.

Wow...3 years old and only 20 inches long? Thats tiny! And if I tried to feed mine one mouse every 2 weeks he'd eat his own cage lol. Get him outta there

Thank you everyone, I'll try to deal the tegu price to 50$ and need more information about the temperament, the owner is like 1 hours of distance in car from my home, so I really need more info about it.

Hernandosmom, thank you for the precision, I hope that nobody took those information as fact. These are common stupidities that you can hear in Quebec about how to keep reptile.

Good luck Ben on getting the tegu! So many people put strictly a price value on a reptile and don't really care about the care and $$ that will be needed to get the animal to good health. I have a local classified here in Ontario that is selling a female Arg Tegu for breeding, she is 18" in size...My 9 month old tegu (40") would break the poor little girl!

    Keep us posted!

Gah, that just eats me up... I really hope that you're able to take the little guy on, Ben. He doesn't deserve to "live" like that. I simply can't fathom why someone would put money over the health and well being of an animal. They Boyfriend an I came to the decision that we needed to rehome our tegus (because of our work schedules RADICALLY changing), and the first thing we agreed on was that we were going to look to get any money for them. We just wanted them to go to a new home.

    (Once again, THANKS PIKEY!!!)
