How well do they digest the hay, Pikey?

I know it's not digested well by animals who're not herbivores and have small, underdeveloped caecums.

@ enigma, i've been having problems with little nats/"sewer flies" with my cypress too

@ Owl, i've not seen any difference in stool between the 2 that eat it & the 4 that don't.
there has been no signs of bloating, gas, or anything to make me worry, i will say when it's time to change the hay/straw you'll smell it before you see it. (a very musty/stale smell)

i'm thinking of getting those 2 some fresh timothy hay to see if they'll like that.

I have looked high and low for Cypress mulch and have had no luck other then tiny bags of the stuff. @$5 a bag I would need atleast 50 bags to just cover the floor so no way. I use coconut fibre. There is a store in Barrie that sells good size bales for $30, comes in small, med, and large grade husk. It holds the moisure well and I have yet to see mold with it. I also have yet to see my Tegus try to eat it. 1 bale will do my 8x4x4' enclosure.

Yes, I put about half the bag in a rubbermaide bin and add a fare bit of warm water, mix it all up so it is all moist/wet and put the lid on for 30 minutes. It will swell to fill the whole container then I do it again with the rest of the mulch.

Hey, has anyone tried cypress shavings (the type people use on small pets, ie: hamsters, guinea pigs, rats)? The place I have babysit Desmond when I visit my parents uses it on their tegus, monitors, and snakes.
I'm thinking of switching to that - let me know if there are any setbacks to using it!
