    Default Monitor smell help!!!

ive got a large nile and his poops stink up the whole house within seconds of him pooping. is there anything i can do to keep the smell down. hes in a mostly mesh cage with newspaper substrate. i have him in mesh bc i keep my reptile room at a high enough humidity. Would the smell be because of the news paper? i dont think it would matter because of him always going in his water bowl. Any suggestions are appreciated. i have to find out a way to get rid of the smell asap or my whole collection is going to have to go.

I think it is the size of the lizard and the ensuing poop and the diet. Carnivorous reptiles have a smellier poo in my opinion. It could also be due to parasites, so a fecal check at the vet may be in order. You can just drop off a fresh sample.

I agree with laura. But hey it is a big lizard so you get big poop! How is it coming out though, my friend had a sav with the same problem and it came out almost like liquid and smelled so terrible, needless to say it was parasites and after some vet treatment he re homed the sav.

Maybe try soaking him to get him to go in the tub where the water could also break down the smell and then you just flush it down from there.

Or put him on a more absorbent substrate, just scoop and through out.

This is like saying why does my dog's poop stink, it is poop from a large lizard, it isn't going to smell good. How big is he? Why are you not using substrate? What is the humidity in the room? What are your temps, ambient and basking?

Also, if you're feeding anything fishy the poop will smell a WHOLE lot worse.

If the poop is like liquid and smells kind of sour I would get him checked for parasites. If the poop is nice and solid then it could be something he ate. We have a black throat monitor and when he eats hard boiled eggs or fish his poop stinks, too. Or when he poops in the morning while we are at work and we come home then it smells bad, too, because it has been sitting there for a while ( same with our Tegus ). Try to spot clean the poop as soon as you can.
