Thread: Nesting

I'm interested to hear from some of you breeders and researchers about the nesting habits of tegus. From the breeders are you using a special substrate during egg laying? Where do Tegus in the wild lay their eggs? Do they bury the eggs deep in a burrow or near the surface and cover them up with brush?

I wish I could help you, but I never bred any Tegus yet. Here is some info for you I found. The first video is from Varnyard ( Bobby Hill ). He is one of the best breeder out there.

I remember tupinambis saying that Colombian tegus would lay eggs in old termite mounds. My Colombian laid her eggs in the substrate and guarded the area, but it wasn't a formed nest, per se. I gave my Argentine females fresh timothy hay and they molded it into a burrow and nested inside. I had already planned on removing the eggs, so I wasn't looking for a durable nest.

Thanks to both of you. The videos of Bobby's T. Marianae females nesting reminds me of how alligators make nests that also act like compost heaps and keep the eggs warm and hidden. Laura R did your Columbians bury the eggs or were they on the surface?

She has buried the eggs, but in different places, not in one nest. I also found them on the surface once. Very hard to gather and incubate.
