    Exclamation Heat, UVA/UVB lighting video

Hi veryone. I just found this video on youtube and thought I post it on here. I have been using this lighting for years now and never had any problems with it.

I love the PowerSun. They have already had their issues and corrected them. By the way, I use deep domes with ceramic fixtures from home Depot and have never had a problem with their warranty. I think that sometimes they are trying to sell things.

I have also had eye issues with the PowerSun at 12" with beardies, so I don't know if I would agree with his statement that 8" is an OK distance. Glass dancing lizards decrease the distance quickly.

I use them for a year and have had no issues.

    Just my two cents, lol!

Yeah, Laura, I'm with you, they are just trying to sell stuff. There was information in that video that was patently false. I have several UV meters, I make it a point to take one with me just about anywhere I go. On a clear sunny day anywhere in the world during summertime (well, ok, maybe not the extremes of the arctic and antarctic, I haven't been there) you are going to measure UVB in the 300 uW/cm^2 range, not 120 as he suggests. If it was "clear and sunny" and I was only measuring 120uW/cm^2, then there would have to be a lot of polution in the air. I am intrigued about the heat factor being responsible for bulbs going on and off.....I've had bulbs do this, but if it is a heat relationship, then I'd argue that something is affecting this threshold as I've had some bulbs do this where intrinsic heating shouldn't have been a factor. I give the advice that the bulb AND dome should never touch the top of the cage not only for safety sake, but in my experience with the thousands of dollars I've invested in mercury vapour bulbs over the years, one of the critical important factors I've seen affecting the lifespan of bulbs is movement. If the animal is big enough to cause vibrations in the cage (and tegus indeed are such), those vibrations impact the bulb.

Laura. I get the same domes. I never had any problems with them either. I like them alot because they are more open ( bigger dome ) then what they are selling and it's cheaper. You are right. Pet stores charge so much more money for things that you can find else where much cheaper. Look at the mulch or other things. Somethings I got at the dollor tree lol ( decoration or tubs for the enclosures ).People do have to make sure that it's a ceramic top not plastic.

tupinambis. Thank you for the great info. I always use some clips ( you can see it in the link below ). When they jump up alot and hit the screen top I use a shower curtain rod to clamp the lighting ( dome ) to it.

This dome was deep enought to where the buld didn't touch the screen top.

This one wasn't. That's when I used the clips.

I have domes sitting on top of some cages. I learned a couple of years back about short domes and how they melt the plastic coating on a huge ig cage. ahem My dear pet sitter repeated that mistake when replacing a broken hood last winter. I did have one sitting on my young tegu's cage. She popped up and knocked it over. I just set it upright because I was in a hurry. She knocked it again and blew the bulb. I should have known better. I guess since the bulb was old anyway and needing to be replaced, I wasn't worried. But it is a huge fire hazard as well.

You are right, it is. This is why I use some shower curtain rods that I duct tape to the enclosure lol. Then use the clamp on the light fixture to clamp it to the rod. This way they can't knock it over.
