    Default Srbosjek the Red

Well, I got Srbosjek back around April of last year. He didn't eat much at all until he went into hibernation in august and was quite skinny when he woke up around late February to march and didn't get much of an appetite until late march but he has been eating well since then. He seems to be going into a growth spurt and has almost doubled in size with a nice fat tail base. Only problem I'm having right now is taming him. When he came out of hibernation, he was skittish and would run back to his hide. I've worked with him some by ignoring him when he was basking and doing stuff in there. I read him a book for about a week and today I fed him and stayed in there looking away from him and he ate it quickly. Not sure where to go after that. Probably sitting in there with his cage open for a while and then playing with the mulch.

Here is a picture of the day I got him

Here he is 2 weeks ago. He's even bigger now.

Edit: I forgot about the show and tell section. This would have been better placed there if someone wants to move it.

Thanks. I can never seem to get a picture when he's basking. The light is too bright for my phone to handle.

Welcome back. Long time no see. Congrats on your Tegu. He is so cute . Since he is that small you maybe want to try my shirt trick. I used it on all six of our Tegus and it worked very well. I did almost the same thing with our black throat monitor and it worked with him, too. I don't want to be rude. But if his hide is a card board box I would take it out and put a hole into a plastic bin and put it upside down. This may you can mist his hide and it will be nice and humit in there for him .

Tegus feel safe when they get to hide and they also like the warmth of the body.

Houdini is a bit to big to put him inside my shirt lol.

Seems like he's a bit big to try that. He's a little over 2' now, I think. He's been too skittish for me to go near him. Once he lets me touch him, I may try that.

I did this with that size, too. I know some members don't agree with me but it worked for me. There was a time that our Tegus seemed more skittish on some days then others. I just reached in there and got them out. I always thought the longer I would wait to handle the Tegus the longer it would take for them to feel safe around me. It just took a few days and they realized they have nothing to worry about with me.

When you try to get him out of the enclosure do you put your hand infront of him or above him ? They feel safer if you try to scoop them up and then put your other hand ontop of him as soon as you get him out. So he will not fall.

I haven't tried to get him out of the enclosure since before he went into hibernation. He's calmer now but I still don't want to try until he will freely come up to me and let me touch him. I set my hand in his basking spot today while he was running around his cage and after a bit he came up and licked me. Then I played in the mulch and his water dish a bit and then left to get his lunch ready and I gave that to him. I think I'm making a lot of progress towards getting him comfortable with me. 2 months ago, he would run at the sight of anyone. Now he's a lot more relaxed. Maybe another week and I can try picking him up if progress continues like this.

I'm glad to hear that he is calming down for you . You know your Tegu best and know what works for him. Some things might work for some people but not for others. That's why we all have to try different things to see what works best for the Tegu. Keep up the good job . Please keep us posted.

Here is a lot newer picture. I'd normally edit it to darken it some more but I don't have photoshop on this computer at the moment.
