    Default Lighting help please..

    Hello..

I've had many snakes and this is my first time owning a Tegu .. I have an awesome tegu about 2 months old and need help on lighting. I'm moving to Florida in a few months where i will build him a custom enclosure at the moment i have him in 40 gallon breeder.

I'm looking for a Uva/Uvb bulb for him and not sure which one to buy for the enclosure i have him in.
Also any good Basking/Heat bulbs as well..

    Thanks,Steph

Hi Steph. Welcome to our Tegu forum family and congrats on your new Tegu. They are amazing lizards. I recommend the one in the link below. I have been using them for many years now and never had a problem. I like that bulb alot because it has heat, UVA/UVB in one. Tegus like to bask alot and will benefit the most from the UVA/UVB with this buld.

chitodadon. What is your basking temps and how do you measure them ? It might be to hot for him and he rather stays more at the cooler side. I recommend measuring the basking temps right under the light on the basking spot.

Stephsreptilecorner. I would get the 100W. Do you have a regular or deep dome ? If it's a regular one you have to be a bit careful that the bulb doesn't touch the screen top. You can use some clips like the ones I have in the first link. If you want to you can go to a hardware store like Homedepot or Lowes and have them cut the right lenght of a closet rod ( it's wood ). Then you can ductape it to the enclosure. Does your dome have a plastic or ceramic socket ? You can get the clamps at any hardware store, too. So you can put the clamp on the dome and then clamp it onto the rod.

Those are clamps to close like chips bags. I got them at the Dollar Tree ( a dollar store where I live ).

With this dome I always remove the metal wire that sticks out in front of the dome.

They have this wooden closet rod at Homedepot, too. I just saw the metal one on their website.

If he starts to bask more you maybe can higher the basking temps a bit again. The basking should be from 110 to 115. But try your temps first and see how it goes. Keep a eye on the poop. If there is any food that didn't get digested well ( if you can see some skin from the cut up grapes, hair from the fuzzie mice ) then the temps are to low.
