    Default Would love some insight!

    Hello forum members!

I just joined the forum today. My first tegu arrived on friday, september 7th. He is a 2 month old black and white argentine named Ash.
I have a question reguarding his substrate. I've been using eco-earth for the past 5 days, but the breeder who I purchased my tegu from said that eco earth can cause severe impaction. He highly recommends coco husk coarse chips. What is your opinion/experience on your favorite substrate? Should I switch to something else?

    Thanks so much!!

I don't know why the breeder would recommend coco husk coarse over eco earth for impaction reasons. I use a combination of Eco Earth and Cypress Mulch for all of my tegus and recommend the same for all of my customers

Of course, as long as you're feeding outside the enclosure you shouldn't run into any impaction issues.

Hi Mike. Welcome to our Tegu forum family and congrats on getting Ash. To be honest with you, if you feed inside the enclosure there is a high risk of Ash getting impacted no matter what type of mulch you use. I always used the coco husk when our Tegus were babies. The bad thing about the coco husk is it dries out very fast and you would have to mist it alot and stir it up. I like to use the 100% organic ( not a blend ) of cypress mulch. If you would get a blend there could be some cedar or pine in it which is toxic. If you want to you can check out my youtube channel ( the link is in my signature ). There you can see how you can get a Tegu out of the enclosure and put him into a feeding bin.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Btw, I have been feeding in tge enclosure so far. Ive been putting down a large section of newspaper under his food dish so that he cant drop food on the substrate. I will, cpourse, begin feeding him outside of his enclosure when he gets more comfortable with me. So, in conclusion, if I feed outside the cage, then eco earth is tegu-friendly?

    Thanks again, so much all!!

Yes, it will be fine. Please make sure that you mist it down so it stays moist ( not to wet/soaked ) and stir it up. Eco earth dries out very fast. When it's dry it's normal for you to hear your Tegu sneeze because of the dust.
