Welcome to the site . The hardest part of owning a tegu is the beginning, getting everything together, researching and learning before hand and after then not worrying so much and constantly comparing your tegu to others (which some people do a lot). But like most things after you get into it and finally relax it's not that difficult or time consuming. Once you get the basics together it's just general up keep.
Other than that where you get it from is your preference, since not everyone minds having or caring for an import. Unless it came directly from a breeder it may as well be an import anyway, since some shops will just tell you what you want to hear. Either way breeder or not we wouldn't have most exotic pets if it wasn't for imports and wild caught animals.
Besides breeders there are always people looking to sell their tegus through out the year on classified ads young and some older, that preference also depends on you.

It doesn't really matter, start with what you want and or are comfortable with.
It's similar to getting a cat or dog. Do you want something older that's more than likely already trained or in this case worked with. Pretty much set in it's ways personality wise and depending on where it comes from you can ask questions to find out it's likes or dislikes. Or do you want to start fresh with something younger that you have to work with and put in the time and effort to raise and watch it grow.
You can check local ads, fauna classifieds, craigslist or kingsnake classifieds even the tegu sites have ads posted sometimes from members selling or just re home theirs.
Out of 7 tegus only 2 of mine came from breeders (both were babies), 4 from shops (also young) 3 of which are known imports and 1 is a 4yr old rescue that I saw on craigslist. So,.. where they come from is just personal preference.
