great. i would sit by his cage when i noticed he was trying to get out, then i would open the door and put my hand by the edge so he would use it as a ramp to get out and to know my hand is ok. then i would let him out and he would walk around the area i was sitting and when he was done would just hop back in his cage. a couple days in and he already knows where his cage is.

    here's a video too

Since he still has some green on him I don't think that he is 8 months old. They don't keep the green color for to long. He also would be to small for a 8 month old ( unless he wasn't fed enough or hibernated ). It's hard to tell how old a Tegu is. Because some grow very fast and some not so fast. Males also grow faster then the females.

ah ok. my only experience so far is with bearded dragons/geckos. do you think he's going to want to hibernate this young? i know bearded dragons dont until they are adults. he seems pretty snuggled up in his hide

Some Tegus go into hibernation when they are hatchlings. In the video below is our Venus on her first day home. She went into hibernation about a week later and didn't come out until April. Her brother Shakespeare did the same thing.

is there a good way to tell if he is trying to hibernate? i left some ground turkey out on a plate before i left for work and he ate it all so it seems like hes coming out to bask and look for food.

I hate these 10 hour shifts. I leave before he wakes up and i get home after hes put himself to bed. on the other hand, if i didnt work so much, i wouldn't be able to afford a tegu or all my other stuff. bleh

edit- oh, i tried your shirt trick by the way. he was fine when he was in there but does not seem to be wanting to chill right now. i don't blame him though, i figure hes super scared still, plus no baby of any sort of animal or human wants to just be chill unless they are tired lol.

It doesn't sound like that he wants to hibernate. When they want to hibernate he wouldn't come out as much or not at all. He also wouldn't eat anything. When I used my shirt trick was first thing in the morning when they just wake up and hasn't been basking yet. Because at this time they are still cold and will like the warmth of the body. After a little while when they start to crawl around in there I take them out and put them in their enclosure to bask. I just do this with one Tegu at a time.
