    Default What to do??

I gave my tegu food in the bathroom today, in the tub and when took up my lizard again he gets mad and tries to buck out of my hands .. what should I do to calm him down? Can he get so angry that he bites me? Im beginning to think that he doesn't like the water so much!

    Thank you

How big is your Tegu ? When you give him a bath try to put your hand underneath him so he feels save ( like I did with mine in the video below ). Do you feed him until he is full ? When you pick him up please make sure that all of his legs and feet are supported either by your arm or your chest. Allot of Tegus don't like having their feet in the air. This is when they start to squirm around.

At this size I would feed him every day until he is full. I recommend feeding him about one hour after he basked. This way he basked long enough to get his metabolism going but isn't so hungry that he might be a bit aggressive and is going to bite your hand when you reach into the enclosure. It always helped me to tame our Tegus and black throat monitor by holding them when they just woke up and are still cold. When the body is cold they are kind of slow . They will like the warmth of your hands/body ( that's when I did my shirt trick in the video below ).

Don't be worried if he doesn't want to eat one day or not as much. If he had a big meal the day before ( like some rodents ) then he might not be hungry. They also sometimes slow down on the eating part when they are shedding. When he gets close to be a year old and a bit older he might go through some puberty and maybe will be a bit moody. You can add just a few drops of cod liver oil to the food once or twice a week. Unless you feed him some fresh fish filets. This will help with the shedding.
