i think mine was starting to also. either let him hibernate or do what i did and raise the temp 5-10 degrees and physically move him into his basking spot and hell be more active
Call your vet and see what they think. Seriously. They are familiar with Bo. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your vet, but I have a great herp vet. He and his tech work very closely together and also attend exotic animal conferences to stay up to date on current medical info. If I call and ask a question about a patient that has been sick, he would either call me back personally or his tech would and make sure to answer my questions. He is a bit expensive, but worth every penny.

Well, I just read your last post at the end of the previous page. Missed that, sorry. If they want you to continue with calcium, then you need to wake him up and give him the calcium, imo. Then either place him in the basking spot or move the light over him so he can boost his metabolism.
I've never had a sick animal hibernate, so I don't want to give you advice that may end up negatively affecting your tegu. I don't know if it would make a difference to his condition or not since the body systems slow down.

Well he is definately hibernating. The vet said that his calcium levels should be up as he has been on meds for 3 weeks so hopefully it will be ok. Question now is what do I do now? Temps? Lighting etc

Has your vet had a lot of experience treating reptiles and exotic pets? I'm currently working with a Frilled Dragon who's undergoing very similar problems - he's grown lethargic, barely eats, has swollen joints and doesn't walk correctly. We've run all of the blood work and his levels are fine, including calcium, so the vet and I have chalked it up to bad genetics. :(
Has he run bloodwork to ensure there isn't a kidney issue involved? From what you've described his enclosure sounds like it should be just right.

The vet did say it could just be down to bad genetics. He hasnt taken blood and didnt mention it although he is a zoo vet with reptile experience. Thankyou for your input. As mentioned in previous posts he seems to be hibernating now, should I leave him?

I wouldn't let him hibernate either if he is sick. I do would remove the heat mat and the red light. I'm trying to find the article I saw about the red light. When your Tegu is trying to walk is he shaking his legs/arms a bit ? When a healthy Tegu goes into hibernation it is recommended to shorten the time that the lights are on. If he doesn't come out at all then the lights stay off until he comes out of hibernation.

He is up and basking after 36 hours being buried so maybe he isnt hibernating. Still not eating. I have removed the heat mat and infra red light but that means there is no night time heating. He walks very little when out of his enclosure and seems to only use his rear legs. If he uses his front legs then he stumbles. He seenms much better when walking on substrate but seems to crawl rather than walk, his legs dont twitch or shake when walking but they do a little if I hold him. I have booked him with a more specialist vet some distance away but have to wait until after the holiday period. I hope thats not too long. In the meantine im trying everything I can
