    I prefer to have the bulb in the corner so that I can create a temperature gradient from warmer to cooler.

    To add to what's already been said thermometers depending on the type and how they are used are usually for ambient temps, while temp guns measure surface temperatures. While it can take a bit of time for a thermometer to register and read proper temps a temp gun does it in seconds.
