Default what brand of cod liver oil is best?

    hello tegu community,
this may sound like a noob question, but i have never heard of cod liver oil before purchasing my tegu 2 weeks ago lol. I am new to this forum, and have learned alot by just scanning over threads! I want to thank you all for just being so awesome and helpful! Now, as for the CLO, what brands do you all use and/or what is the best quality? My tegu Jazz is having trouble shedding her tail and i dont have CLO in her varied diet yet. the rest of her shed came off great. I had one big sheet from her belly and multiple large pieces from her back. Her feet took alittle bit but have shed off with no troubles. I have a schedueled soak twice a week in approx 80* water for 15min for her. She shed 6 days ago and now her full tail (starting at base) is the only part of her body that still has her old skin....and also doesnt seem to be improving. Any comments or concerns about CLO or in shedding would be wonderful

Hi subiedude09. Welcome to our Tegu forum family and congrats on your new Tegu. Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you like our forum. I also would like to say that I'm very proud of you for doing your research . It's normal for the shed of the tail to come of later then from the rest of the body. I do recommend to never pull on the shed. I would rub it and if it comes of loose then that's fine. But if it feels like it's still stuck on there please do not mess with it. If you pull on it and it doesn't come of you could damage some scales and he will have some shedding problems on that area for a while. In the first link below is the Cod liver oil that I use for our Tegus and black throat monitor and for us. I like the capsules because it's easier to measure. Or you can get a bottle and just use a very few drops of it. You don't have to use the fish oil if you don't want to. You can buy some fresh fish filets ( warm them up in some warm tap water first ) like cod, tilapia, tuna, salmon, smelts, any kind of fish. This will help with the shedding, too. I feed the fish to our Tegus and black throat monitor once a week ( if I don't use the cod liver oil ). In the second link is some info for you to check out about the shedding. Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have. This is what we are here for.

thank you txrepgirl for the fast response! i soaked her in warm water yesturday and lightly used a towel to see if the tail skin was ready and the end result was "not ready" lol. i actualy fed her a half filet of salmon and she loved it (didnt cross my mind as a secondary option for CLO lol). her diet for the next 2-3weeks (blended all the following together and seperated into seperate bags) consist of ground chicken, 2 salmon filets, blueberries, strawberries, an apple and of course her calcium dust. she will also get her rodent twice a week. thank you for the help on the CLO. ive done nothing but researching day in and day out about everything there is to know about tegu's. I lost my bearded dragon 2 months ago by a deadly seizure. i witnessed everything unravel before my eyes and i couldnt do anything to help. I brought him to a vet to find out that specific office doesnt take reptiles, then took him to a reputable animal store and learned a few things, but nothing helped. So, with that being said, i want nothing but the BEST for my tegu! i want her to grow healthy, strong, and smart....and old i dont ever want to go thru that stuff again!

You are very welcome . Any time. I'm very sorry for your loss and that you had to go through such a heartbreaking time. But at least you can say you tried to help him. Sometimes this is all you can do. It's not your fault some Vets don't know crap ( excuse my bad language ). The diet sounds really good. I do recommend using two bags. Put the food in one bag. Fold it over and stick it into another bag. This will help with getting less freezer burn. If the food has some freezer burn on it it's still good. Just remove the parts that has the freezer burn. If you want to you can go on your local Craigslist.com. Go to the household or/and general section. In the search bar type in food saver. I bought one on there for $20 with some bags. If you do this I recommend plugging it in, put a bag in it and make sure it works before you buy it . I have one for our food and one just for the lizards. With the food saver you don't have to worry about the freezer burn and the food will last allot longer. If you don't mind me asking. Are you buying the feeder rodent's at the pet store or do you bulk order them ?

Your welcome. Just in case you are interested in bulk ordering the feeder rodent's I would get them from Rodentpro.com. They kill the feeders fresh to your order. I know you might be worried about the shipping part. But at the end it's still much cheaper then having to drive to the pet store. Over paying for the rodents and wasting gas ( and time ).

Your very welcome. I like it when they are bred for feeders and are frozen. I'm was always worried before with the live feeders that they are maybe sick or have parasites. I don't know if you saw this info on their site. But I'll post it in case you didn't see it. Once you ordered from them and you get on their mailing list you will get a $10 off coupon sometimes.
