Hi guys,I have been thinking about getting a Columbian Tegu and have decided I would like one. Before I get one I need to do my homework on them though. So far I know about the cage size and cage requirements. I would like to know if having a tegu out of its enclosure in AZ would be bad for it, do I have to humidfy my entire house or just the enclosure? Are they able to be taught not to mess with a dog? (The dog is a Chow Sheperd that loves everyone and is a rug.) Is a humidifier a thing I could use for the cage? Any other helpful tips would be appreciated greatly

No need to keep the whole house humid, just properly maintain it's enclosure. Tegus are tropical animals but not rainforest tropical, they don't need constant humidity Argentina has dry seasons just like every where else. Maybe not always as dry as other places but they still have them. Some animals get a long and tolerate different species better than others. Whether or not it works depends on the animals but some tegus don't mind and learn to tolerate dogs. Regardless of your dogs temperament now that could change around the tegu.

The dog is a good one, he maintains a radius of 2 feet from our Beardie if we let the Beardie roam for a bit. I am sure I can teach the dog not to mess with the tegu but, will the tegu not mess with the dog?

Hi RoarktheReptileLover. Welcome to our Tegu forum family. Congrats on getting a Tegu. The Columbian Tegus are a lot like the Argentine Tegus ( housing, food ). Some Columbian Tegus don't eat any fruits or veggies. If you get your Tegu as a hatchling and he/she will grow up around your dog and is tame than I think they could get along ( since your dog is a good one ). We have five Tegus and one is a bit aggressive. So we don't let him around our dog. The other for are fine. Do you know what to feed your Tegu ? Or would you like a Caresheet ?

I haven't got one yet. Also after doing some more research I decided an Argentine B&W Tegu would probably better suit me. I will get one just got to prepare the way. I would appreciate a care sheet though.

I know you didn't get one yet . I just thought since you are doing all your research now that you might want to know what to feed. Let me know if you need some information on where to get a Argentine Tegu. Here is the caresheet.

What would be a good breeder to buy a tegu from? I was thinking of Backwaterreptiles but, then I saw a horrid reveiw about a guy that received a snake with a white tumor on it. Also, would a humidifier be a valid option to humidify the cage? Or do I have to mist it every day? Thanks for the care sheet link by the way :P

Your welcome. Yes, you can use a humidifier. Just please make sure that the humidity doesn't get to high ( 70% is good ). Because if it's to high than he can get a upper respiratory infection. I also recommend to stir up the mulch every now and then so it doesn't get to wet on the bottom.

    The breeders I recommend:

Here are two other places you can check out if you like.

Backwater is not a breeder, but a dropshipper and storefront. Sometimes they don;t see what they have and sometimes they just flip animals, from what I hear. I haven't heard many positives compared to the negatives.

Is reptilestogo a good source for a tegu? I looked at Teguterra, and saw that reptilestogo is cheaper
