    Default Tegu Cage Aggression

Hello all. I am asking for help because I finally got the lizard of my dreams, a two foot long argentine (maybe chacoan mix). He's always had problems with aggression before feeding, he started getting better about biting when I got him out to feed him. But I went away for four days and left him with a close friend of mine. My friend says he did everything normal, used the lighting all day and fed him outside of his cage like I asked. So that means he was being picked up out of his cage. When he brought him home, I was so excited to see him I tried to pick him up. He went into fish wriggle of death mode and even opened his mouth at me like my baby columbian used to. I've tried picking him up for his usual feeding and he was impossible to work with. I even had to feed him in his cage today. I'm really worried. Even when I first got him, he was very friendly. I spent everyday with him until this trip. Any thoughts?

The only thing that I can think of is that he didn't eat as much as he should of. I don't want to start anything between you and your friend. I wasn't there. But a lot of times when Tegus act like this is either they were fed inside the enclosure ( like the Tegu saw the person bring the food and he things you have food in your hands now ) or he is very hungry. I'm sure if you feed him until he is full a few times this will go away. If you are worried about getting bit just put a shirt over him so he can't see you. Then get him out of the enclosure and put him inside the bathtub ( with the food already being in the tub ). After he is full you can handle him for a while. Please keep us posted. Thank you and good luck.

Hi, quick question, as I am learning by perusing lots of posts. I should feed my tegu in the bath-tub?

Yes. Either in the bathtub or in a large big bin. Put the food into the tub/bin first. Then bring the Tegu to the food. This way she will learn that you don't have any food in your hands when you are getting her out of the enclosure.
