Thread: becoming aggressive

    Default becoming aggressive

My boyfriend and I got our first tegu a few weeks ago. From the beginning it was very easy to handle and calm, but over the last week and a half it has become increasingly aggressive. Before I was able to pick it up and calm it down, now I am unable to pick it up. I would like to fix this problem before itgets out of control, so any helpful input is appreciated.

Hi summerlover. Welcome to our Tegu forum family and congrats on your new Tegu. What does he do for him to be aggressive ? Did you change anything like put him into a bigger enclosure or feed him live rodents ? How old is he ? Is he shedding ? Do you feed him inside the enclosure ?

So far we have been feeding her in the cage, since it didn't seem to be a problem in the beginning. She was finishing shedding when we got her, which has been almost a month ago. So far she hasnt bitten us, but she has acted like she intended to. She does hiss anytime we try to handle her, and lunges at our hands. This has been going on for almost 2 weeks now.

I don't want to tell you what to do but I recommend feeding outside the enclosure. It's good to hear that he hasn't bitten you. Feed him until he is full. I also would try to feed him about one to two hours after he basked. If he basks for this amount of time it will get his metabolism going. If he basks for a very long time he might get more and more hungry and this can cause for them to be a bit more aggressive. After he is done eating you can try to hold him for a while. Tegus feel safe when they get to hide. So what you could do is sit or lay down on the couch and put him on your chest. Then put a blanket over him and just hold him. If he starts to huff and puff or flicks his tongue around to much be careful so you don't get bit.

If it isn't to big maybe let it bite you? Mine would lunge and bite too until I let it bite me over and over while still handling it. It hasn't bit me yet or lunged at me after that, usually it just runs away.
