Thread: Male or Female?

    Default Male or Female?

    Hey guys,

I made this post to ask a few questions about the differences between male and female tegus.

So, with males, do they tend to become more aggressive during breeding season? I'm asking cause I know male iguanas can get aggressive and try to mate with anything and everything. Are tegus the same way?
Do males tend to "flash" their hemipenes often? Or is it a once and while kind of thing?

    Thanks

Some of our males go through some mood swings ( like in the videos below ). You can see him huff and puff. But both males and females can make great pets. They don't show the hemipenes all year.

I just noticed them doing this when it's breeding season and they drop the sperm plug.

To be honest with you I never had a Iguana before. So I don't know how they are during the breeding season. Besides the two times that I filmed Leonidas chasing me they are all very mellow.

Ah okay, I have heard about iguanas becoming aggressive during breeding season, so I didn't know of Tegus were the same way. I'm thinking if I end up getting a male Tegu that if he chases me (or other people) around that it would creep friends and family out. Or if he was to evert his hemipenes (for whatever reason) that it would gross friends and family out! Haha!

You have been a great help to me, thank you!

Your welcome. If you want to you can pm laurarlf ( our Admin ) and ask her how her Tegus are during the breeding season. She breeds Tegus. She would know more about it than I do. The only time I have seen our males hemipenes is when they were going to poop or pee ( during the mating season ). It does look a bit strange. I don't know if you seen the hemipenes on a male lizard before. But in case you haven't here is some info on it.
