Ben,
El Sancho is about 4 month, and he's been with me for 2. I have quite a bit of herp experience with iguanas and boas and pythons, but right now I only have the Tegu.
I do go to his cage at the same time every day. I have to go to work early in the morning so I try to spend a few minutes with him before I leave. He's always in his hide when I get home so the mornings is the only time I have. On the weekends I take him out at the same time and spend as much time as I can with him.
These are great animals, and such fun to have as pets. I've considered a second one, but realize my time constraints, family and new son would make it impossible to care for more than one lizard at this time. Not to mention our cats would get very jealous if there was just one more creature to compete with, they already look at my son funny and are eager to get a taste of El Sancho.

greentriple congrats on your new son.Enjoy him as much as you can. They sure do grow up to fast.I have a 13 year old son.Maybe that explains why we have 8 pets  because my son spends more time now with his friends and playing basketball and skateboarding than with his mom  .At least the Tegus and some other pets will always be at home.

Thanks for the information Greentriple.
I see that other people on the forum are much older than me. They all have kids  I'm only 17 years old, and I am at the college and work a little bit. The rest of the time I spend it with Mitsuki my BTS.
It's cool to see that even the adult love to take care of these fantastic pets.
Congrats on your new son !
Thank you!

lol !!! No don't take it personnal, I don't tell you that you are old  I just compare myself to most of people here. My parents we're reptile lovers too, and they still like them, but have less time ( we are 4 kids) it's enough time to spend for them
However, keep posting about your two babies!

I have not had a chance to know a tegu YET(cause they have not hatched yet  ) but I know we will get along with each other..
I have a 6 year old male iguana, he is my best friend..very gentle, sweet and loving iguana.Does not get grouchy or even threaten anyone...Every morning I wake up, turn his lights on and he bobs his head and waits for me to put him in the tub.
He just had his picture taken with santa claus at petsmart, so I should have pics soon
I can't agree with someone that says reptiles don't have emotions..

Wow very good story! I like the part "he is my best friend" when someone say that, its because he have the best interaction he can have with his pet. Very happy to hear that. My parents had an Iguana too, they told me that she was tame social and litter trained. Saddly, the Iguana just escaped the house, my parents we're very sad, and buy another one hopping to had a good Iguana just like the first one. That didn't happen, she was whipping, hissing and bitting when she had the occasion.
If you can tell me some trick you used to "social tame" your Iguana, I would like to hear them!!!
However, I can't say that my Blue Tongue Skink is my best friend because it's not the kind of reptile I was looking for. (too small, not enough curious, a little bit too shy, can't stay on a shoulder.etc) I have to say that he is tame, he never bites me, likes to be pet on the nose and he can stay on my legs for all the time I want. It's a good pet, but not what I research.
I heard to many good stories, anecdotes and video about Tegus. I just fell in love with them. They have the best profile of what I'm looking for.I was interested about the Monitor, but only one species was considered "tame". I will work alot about the social Taming process, that's why I post this subject. I want to hear the stories, tricks and anecdotes about them to be ready when I'll get my Black/White Argentinian Tegu.
About the emotion section, I think the same thing
Thank you so much about your story!
I'm so happy to hear that!
Keep posting!

Hi Ben3233.Don't worry I didn't take it personal.I was just kidding (not about my age) about me being a old fart. Some times I like to joke around a little.Espacially since I don't look or feel old .I'm sorry to hear that your parents Iguana got away :( .I wouldn't know what I would do if one of my babies got a way    .

OK "kids" I'm 38, soon to be 39. I've been into reptiles for 30 years and I've had my share of success stories and failures, but up until now my greatest reptile success was my iguana Harriett (She's been dead 5 or 6 years now). She was the most tame and pleasant animal I've ever had, including compared to my cats. I think the secret was constant handling and I would take her everywhere with me (yes a bit nerdy). If there was a place I thought they would not allow her, I put her in a bag and acted like she was luggage. I took her to parks and let her roam free. I took her to the beach and let her cruise on the sand or carried her on the boardwalk. I let people hold her (with the warning that her nails were sharp and hard). She was around the cats all the time and they hung out just fine. She was treated like any pet I might have and she was the best.
I'm doing the same with El Sancho. This morning when I went to his cage he was right at the glass as if waiting to come out, we showered and now he's fast asleep in the pocket of my robe (he's only 24"). He'll cruise with me as long as I can keep focused on him and my son (BTW - my son stares at El Sancho and wants so much to touch him).
So I guess what I'm saying is constant interaction and treating any animal with "love" will almost always guarantee a great pet or "friend". These guys may not be as evolved as dogs or cats, but that does not mean they can't be as fun.

WOW what a nice story about your Iguana Greentriple. That's the kind of interaction I want to do with my "future" Tegu. As I understand, your Iguana was so social. I would like to know how much hours you spend with her per day?
Thank you so much! Great Story!
