You are right. They do put chemicals in the tanks. They also can carry some bacteria.I do not recommend feeding feeder fish or snails from the pet store. If you want to give your Tegu some fish you can go to the local super market and get some fresh fish filets ( no skin or bones ) and cut it up and give that to your Tegu. Our two Tegus love catfish, cod, tuna, salmon and tilapia.Hope that helps.

i like tilapia cause it has no fish smell. once i put fresh sole in my girls tank came back an hour or two later and vomited a little in my mouth my room stunk like low tide so bad.

also, if you want to do the "whole fish" thing mexican markets have frozen smelt and herring. those can be fed whole (herring only for large tegu's)

Talapia is good, you don't have to remove bones, it's not like you debone mice do you....

Some feed whole smelt, others pieces. I've tried a variety of fish, usualy a bit of what we're going to eat at home and Sancho likes it all. In fact, he eats it more readliy than most other food.

I saw a brochure at a vet before saying that you shouldn't let your dogs lick or eat fresh fish from the sea or lake because they have bacteria on the skin.I don't know if that goes for the Tegus, too, but I would say better save than sorry. If you want to use the fresh fish I would clean it really good and give it to your Tegu as a filet ( No skin or bones ).If you want to ask your vet about that brochure.
