    Default New to Tegu's

Hello! I am a some what experienced herp owner. I own leopard geckos, chameleons, beardies and as of yesterday, a beautiful red tegu. She is a female and about a year old according to the guy I got her from. She is about 18" from head to tail tip. She was in hibernation when I got her, the guy said he had been waking her up for the past few days.

I'm planning on making her a lightweight a movable enclosure so I can bring it in and out of the house. I put her in a big screen cage for now and she didn't like it. She kept pushing on the screen and I was afraid she was going to make her snout raw.

She is currently hiding in my couch cushions. Do you guys have any advice as I am new to tegus. Thanks!

Hi BMXICAN.Welcome to the Tegu forum family and congrats on your new Tegu.I recommend putting her in a enclosure that will hold humidity or she will have allot of shedding problems. That screen enclosure that you have her in will not hold any humidity or heat.I also recommend putting some cypress mulch in the enclosure.Enough for her to dig in and hide. Here are some infos for you to check out if you like.Hope that helps for now.Do you have any pictures of her ?

8O wow she is bright red  .Poor baby lost all of her toes. Now you know why I recommended to put her in a enclosure that holds humidity. The person that had her before you didn't kept the humidity up.She couldn't shed the properly and the shed got stuck on her and cut of the circulation of the toes  .

    No sh*t? That's horrible!
I just noticed that one of her toes has a red scab all around it, almost like it got stuck on fishing wire or something. Now I know why! I'm tying to find a tank for her as we speak. What is a good place for mulch and what kind? Cypress mulch? Thanks for the help!

PS: Is she an argentinian Red?

Your welcome.Any time  .Yes, she is a Argentine red Tegu.I get my organic cyress mulch from Walmart. You might want to call around first before you go to one because not all of the Walmarts have it now because it's winter time. You also can try Lowes or some nurseries.About the tank what you can do is go to craigslist.org ( not .com ).Click on your state and city.Than go to pets.I found to very big 150 ( $85 ) and 250 ( $165 ) gallon enclosures on there. If you can't find one on there what you can do is post a add on there and let people know what you are looking for.

Your welcome.I'm glad I can help.Yes, the warm bath would help allot.I don't know if the toe is open or not.If it is I recommend keeping it clean. If it's not open you can put some mineral oil on it after the bath. That will soften up the skin. Please do not pull on loose skin. You can rub on it gently and if it comes of great if not leave it alone. If you pull on the skin if it's not readdy to come of you can damage the scales and they can get infected. When you get the new enclosure mist down the mulch every other day and stir it all up.It should be moist to the touch not wet so it will not start to mold and please put a tub ( like a new clean cat litter box ) with warm water in the enclosure so she can soak in it when she wants to.It is normal for them to go poop in there. When she does you can rins it out and clean it with some strong vinegar.Wear gloves because that vinegar is very strong and will burn your skin.It will kill all the bacteria from the tub. Please make sure that you rins it out really good with some hot water.

Sweet! She keeps "burrowing" under my couch cushions and chilling. Maybe she is still hibernating... Do I keep it going or try to "wake her" up from hibernation? Gracias!

    Welcome!!

She sure is a bright Red!!

The tail may have a couple of retained sheds. 18" is very small for a 1 year old Tegu. I have 11 week old Blue Tegu babies that are 21" long.

She's going to need a bit of TLC to get her back in shape.
