Hi Ben.Yes, it does hold humidity well but I do not recommend it because if it stays moist ( or wet ) for to long it can start to mold and have some fungus on it.

We have always used part peat mixed in with mostly bark substrate and have always had good luck. A couple of caveats: I bake all the peat before putting any in the enclosure. This kills spores and any bugs that may have come along for the ride. Also, because Hernando insists on free-roaming in his tegu-proofed bedroom while we're at work, his substrate has a chance to get pretty dry at least every other day. I gently stir all the substrate while he's out of the cage.

Peat holds the humidity in and, if he pees in his cage (he prefers not) it holds the wet together so it's easier to scoop out than would be plain bark. He seems to find it comfortable, too. On nights that he chooses the cool side, he'll find an area with damp peat under the surface and smoosh his face down into it. I think it's cleaner to breath.

At least with you it is different because it's not in a enclosure that stays humid all the time.As long as it can dry out like that I think it would be ok.I was just worried about it saying wet all the time and baking it is a very good idea  .

    Hmmm thank you everybody!

I'll probably try peat moss, if I can't find coconut fiber.
