to be honest mate,i was just like you are now, except i had a 3ft tegu who enjoys strolling around the house, the more i got closer to the dorr of the outside world she,d freak. eventually i got her outside in the back garden just on my shoulder at first, baby steps are a must in this sort of field. she slowly started getting use to the fresh air and cool breeze and eventually i decided to buy a harness suitable for her size.
once it came i decided to give it a try doing what i did in the back garen and let her on the floor to explore she seems a bit skittish and did run of but due to her being on her harness she didnt get far. a few days at a time i tried this. then eventually i decided to walk acorss the road onto a huge field which isnt open as such for the public, it doesnt get used much at all as i live on a well established estate that doesnt get yobs and idiots. its very very quiet, anyway i took her out on her harness carrying her across at first to settle her on the grass. the weather was nice and she started to wonder but was very very scared whilst doing so, the world was her oyster and you could tell there was some urging with her strolling. she was out for an hour or so just doing baby steps with her. she seemed to settle a little bit better, the time came to take her home and she skittied like mad running at me with all 4 claws mouth wide open running and jumping and it worried me thinking i wouldnt be able to get her back home with her being like this.

i had to take my top of and cover her eyes whilst picking her up and swore to my self that day ill never do this again as she seemed it was too much for her. i dont know if she ever went out with the last owner at all. possibly home bound, i do let her roam around but when ever she comes close to the outside world she freeks. and she does remember even from today what that day was like.

the harness got cut up and will never use one on her again.

im not saying dont use one , as ive said i never brought mine up i bought her at a pet shop due to her being kept in a 4ft tank and only having a very tiny cave for a hide. shes 3ft and looked very cramped, there was no hot and cold side really in her tank as she had a 160 watt power sun bulb which heated the full tank within minutes.

i never even wanted a lizard but that day i soent my full wages that id just got that day on her because i felt guilty for the way she was kept. from this day i feel i saved her from being mistreat. i built her a custom 8ft 3 ft 2ft tank, she now loves me long time.

i even treated her to a fellow male tegu who is of adult size to keep her company. hes on her like a rash.

Since they grow so fast I would by all of them.I do recommend having the leash on at all times. At first I took walks with them ( one by one ) on my sholder in the neighborhood.Than I sat down in the grass and let them be on my lap. When they didn't feel cared anymore they climb of my lap and got into the grass. As soon as I moved they started to arch they're back ( like a mad cat lol ) and two times one of my Tegus ran to my and tried to bite me ( but he didn't ).I also recommend getting some gardening gloves ( like the ones you use for rose bushes ) with those one you still can feel things but they are thick enough not to get hurt in case your Tegu wants to bite you when you want to pick him up.Please keep us posted on how things are going.Thanks.

The best option for a growing lizard I have found is a crappy looking string type harness for iguanas. It is packaged on a card shaped like an iguana. I just picked one up for my 4 tegus as they are varied in size from about the size of yours to 30 inches. it works well for all of them.

Four Paws Safety Iguana Lead and Harness - Item No. IH-6
6 foot long black Nylon cord with a locking plastic part at the back.
    Completely Adjustable
    Will Not Slip or Bind
    Washable

also usable for rabbits, ferrets, etc. May find similar lead in the ferret isle or online

Works for me and it was only $5 -$6 !!!

I have used one in the past for a 4' 10" Nile monitor and a 30" Grand Cayman Blue Rock Iguana Hybrid with no problems. (short of the obvious getting it on and off) They don't like leashes as a rule but you'll enjoy not having to chase an expensive, warm lizard outside. Enjoy!

I like ferret harnesses or small dog harnesses. I found that the lizard harnesses are like one strap and that must feel tight or constricting in some manner. They are difficult to put on and the lizard fights against it. The ferret harnesses are sort of H shaped and apply pressure more evenly across different points. They are easier for me to apply and the lizard doesn't resist. Have you ever tried to convince a large lizard to put his front leg into one of those little holes? LOL

me personaly wouldnt bother buying any, it only puts stress on your tegu, surely if i had problems with mine running at me with mouth wide open at adult size, surely thats saying something, i.e they dont like leashes altogether.

i swore never to do it again due to this and shes still sort of scared even when she goes anywere near the outside.
