Please don't be offended by my opinion, because it is just that, my opinion. I am a new Tegu guardian myself and have valued the folks in this forums opinions. These folks are dedicated to providing the best advice to enhance the owners experience, and the Tegus care.

I think you should browse through the different topics in this forum, because it is just FULL of information on about any Tegu related subject you can imagine. These articles may help you with your decision on purchasing a Tegu, or maybe waiting for now.

I have found out in my short Tegu experience that these are amazing reptiles, and they definitely deserve the proper care and housing.

Good luck with your learning experience here on the forum, and with your Tegu decision. We're all here to help each other...whether we're new to the Tegu, or have years of experience, we can all learn from each other! 3HORSE

Adam, we're not trying to be evasive, but the questions that you are asking would require an answer that is literally too long to post.

There are recent threads on these same questions which is why people are saying to look around. Each tegu is different and no one can give a 1-2-3 answer.

My dog and tegu are fine, but I worry about the tegu grabbing the dog's feet. Another poster had a tegu killed by their dog. Each scenario is different.

Taming is different depending on iof you are starting with a hatchling or an adult. Slow, consistent handling and feeding outside of the enclosure are the nest bet for a tame tegu. This article is where many of us began: http://www.thetegu.com/showthread.php?t=7291

Going outside is different...older tegus seem to be a bit calmer about it. It's something you would want to work up to of course. Read this thread: http://www.thetegu.com/showthread.php?t=7556, http://www.thetegu.com/showthread.ph...hlight=harness, http://www.thetegu.com/showthread.ph...hlight=harness

There is a section called "Helpful Information" that is good reading to get you started. It has info about feeding and caging. You are going to need a minimum 6 x 3 ft cage eventually, smaller and your tegu will rub its nose constantly trying to get out.

http://www.thetegu.com/showthread.php?t=4788 Read, read, read...we read a lot to give our animals the best care we can, and ask questions of course.

I saw your other post about cage size and it is easier to answer one question at time.

Hi Adam.If you don't care what Tegu you are getting I would recommend getting a hatchling. If you do would like to get one with MBD please make sure that you have some money saved up ( not just a little bit because vets are expensive if you have to get meds and XR's done ).

The infos I'm giving you is for a hatchling.

    1. How to tame them : What I did and it worked very well with all four of my Tegus is I put on two shirts ( one is for you not to get scratched up and the other one is for the Tegu to hide under ).When ever you want to watch TV put on the two shirts and put the Tegu inbetween the shirts.Tegus feel save when they have a hiding place and you are his hiding place now.He also will stay warm and gets to smell you. This will help him to get used to you faster, too.

    2. Are they fine with dogs : you know your dog better than anyone else does.I have seen Tegus being around big dogs and cats.I do not recommend leaving them alone together.I have three dogs.I will not let my the two big dogs close to any of my Tegus. They are hunting dogs.I do not want to take a chance. Now my medium sized dog is 14 years old and she loves all of our reptiles and is very calm around them.At the end of this video you can see my dog Kylie watch Leonidas eat.

    3. When you want to take the baby Tegu outside I would put him on a reptile leash because when/it you put him down on the ground there is a very high chance that he will take of.Since baby Tegus are scared of being outside most of the time I would sit down and put him on your lap ( while holding the leash ) when he will feel save he will climb of of you and will start to explore.

    4.For a hatchling a 55 gallong would be good.
