We had a Betta recently for years before he passed. We recently purchased another one who is not quite as entertaining as our first, but still beautiful.
I don't know if I'm doing it right, but we keep him in a large bowl and feed him a pinch a food daily. The bowl is cleaned as needed. Water conditioner and a few rocks of aquarium salt are added to the water. The only other maintenance we do is to keep the cat from drinking the water!
Our last one would get bloated when he blew bubbles at the top (a form of nesting behavior). I put in a bit of live plant for him to munch and it quit. Maybe it was coincidence (shrug) but it was a recommendation.
The first Betta came from a teacher, but the recent one we purchased from Petsmart. We always look for the brightest, most active fish in the place. Have fun!
