    Default Shrimp Ok for Tegu?

I bought some canned shrimp from zoo-med for my aquarium fish and was considering giving some to my Tegu as a treat. They are fresh water river shrimp (Macrobrachium nipponense.) What do you think?

Personly I don't like feeding my Tegus anything that comes from a can. They have to many preservatives ( sorry about the grammer ) in it. I give my Tegus fresh fish filets from the supermarket. I get the ones with no growth hormones in it. Most farmraised ones have that in it. I give them cat fish, cod, tilapia, tuna and salmon. I have tried the shrimp before but they didn't eat it. But this was a while back. Maybe I should try it again ( with the shrimps ) . I wouldn't give it to them with the shell on. I would think it would be to hard to digest it.

I admit, I'm not in favor of canned foods. Overall, too much 'junk' in them. One thing I forget to mention and I'm glad you brought this topic up. My Tegus like scallops, if you like to try them.

Wellll it sounds like some of your tegus have pretty refined tastes. Lol. I'll try and give Zilla some fish sometimes...and the scallops sound like a good idea. Oh and I want you all to know I do share your feelings about the canned foods...I just wanted to try the shrimp to see how he reacts.

Shrimp would be fine for your tegu, I used to feed it all the time to my tegus and monitors, and I've also given them crayfish. Mine always loved em. Just make sure there are no additives and they will be fine. Also, mine have never had any issues with the shells. They just crush em and chow down.

    Default Shrimp Cocktail

I've taken my advice from the ladies here and I personally don't like anything, but soup or the occasional fruits from the can. If I won't eat it I certainly won't let Tegs have it!!! I've seen scallops I'll give that a shot next time.

Any thoughts on squid? I don't see any problems there, but haven't tried it.

As for shrimp, I feed my turtles at home freshwater shrimp. IT is freeze dried and I think produced from zoomed. In that case I think it would be fine, but Tegs didn't take to it, matter of fact he looked at it and turned around n walked away!

Well I tried feeding the shrimp to Zilla..and he loved 'em! Latley I have also had big time feeding trouble with Topaz my Blue tongue. I couldn't get him to eat anything I tried all of his normal afvorites: Caterpillars, Mice, bananas, and crickets...no luck. So I tried the shrimp and they worked great. He loves them.
I'd rather give him fresh over live. Anyone know how to raise fresh water river shrimp?
