Default I'm back and Tegu Entertainment!

    Hey guys!!!

I just wanted to let you know that Tegs and I are getting along great!!! I've finally packed up and moved off to my new apartment and ditched the rents! I've taken the semester off of work and am excited about getting him outside on a harness this spring. I've been interacting with him more and have joined a club at my university dedicated to the education of animals, my committee in particular focuses on exotics.

I have been holding Tegs as much and as long as he'll possible let me, introducing him to new people and trying to feel him out as an individual. He's very bright eyed, active and the only body part that he seems to still go for is my hands. It is a very non-violent clamp and I can get him off without hurting him.

    So a few questions;

    1. Is there anyway to prevent this clamp or is this something we grow out of with time?

    2. Does anyone who works with Tegus and Tegu education have any info, tips, tricks, warning and ect. for me?

    3. I've tried using a ball, but after about 5 mins of thrashing and "toying" he lost interest. Does anyone have any reccomendations on "toys" they use for tegu entertainment? I mean short of setting mice loose in my room. lol When I was moving he really enjoyed climbing in an out, around and over boxes, but that phase only lasted until he inspected and pushed around all my boxes!

    4. Reccomended harness?

    5. From whom shall I purchase frozen mice/rats from in bulk?

(currently flipping through pages for answers)

This is the one I use for our adult Tegus. It has some velcro on it and I never had any problems with it. I had some other ones before but it was to hard to get them in there. I like rodentpro.com, too.

    1. Is there anyway to prevent this clamp or is this something we grow out of with time?
I've never had this issue, so I can't give you first hand experience. I would wonder what is going on with your hands when this happens. Has the tegu been fed first, is he in hunting mode, is he in his cage or outside?

    2. Does anyone who works with Tegus and Tegu education have any info, tips, tricks, warning and ect. for me?
Do you mean the education of the public or animal training?

I don't think they have a real long term attention span. Some of mine will find tennis balls and dog toys and play with them. One plays with a kitchen towel and drags it around. I let them explore and bask on the back porch and they will play in shelves, boxes, blankets, whatever I put out there. I also let them explore the back yard if everything seems OK.

    4. Reccomended harness?
I bought a ferret harness and leash combo

    5. From whom shall I purchase frozen mice/rats from in bulk?
I also use rodent pro. Don't forget to add small quail chicks (or larger if you have a full grown tegu).

The temps are going to be pretty much the same. Ideal is 80+ for basking, I would think. The warmer it is, the longer they can stay out. Minimum for me, if I HAVE to take them out for a show or something is 65-70-ish, depending on how long they'll be out. I prefer the tegus to be at least 70 degress and for just a short period.

    1. When he does it there is no aggressive display. It really comes completely out of no where. If my hand is in front of his mouth he will clamp on and treat it like a catfish fillet. lol I don't believe he has eaten any of the times he has done this and I attribute it to that. I always try to bring him to the food, but I do not use a feeding container mostly because I don't have one large enough.

    2. Education. I joined a group called teachers for creatures at my University. I am part of the exotics committee that consists of, I think 1 hedgehog. lol They really like the fact that I have various reptiles and would like me to be able to show & tell them at different events. Tegs seems calm around people, he lets me hold him for various amounts of time, and I'm going to be doing extensive work with him outside once it warms up.

    3. I might try a clean "bar towel" and see what he thinks of that. He seems more interested in the normal Tegu deal; Diggin and climbing. I dont have much for him to dig, aside from his substrate and I've been noticing him trying harder and harder to find a spot, that is why I ask. I agree with your attention span statement. lol

    4. I like that harness it will be my next purchase.
