Default 2010 first herping Japan (including rear fanged snake and conda)

Still we have cold nights and I have got a foot injury last week
In spite of the situation, I went to herp the day before yesterday
Actually I was wondering whether or not I should go to the wild.
But the good weather made me want to go!

Just an hour traveling from the central of Tokyo,
you can go to something like this kind of nature

The cherry trees are almost in full bloom this season.

transplanting and seedling have been started, yet
But soon it is busy season everywhere

    Dandelion puffball
It makes me want to blow the seeds as a boy

The so-called "Snake street" by the people around here
and I met several snakes here last year actually
But the ground was still flat with a sparse growth of grass.

    The first snakey in 2010!!

This is a young tiger keelback(Rhabdophis tigrinus / yamakagashi in Japanese)
    Quite common snake around water
They are rear fanged colubrid and the color pattern is olive-drab green with black stripes and
bright orange stripes from the neck down the first third of the body.
But there're a lot of colour variation actually. The average length is usually 60-100 cm.

diabolic looks, but they are not that aggresive so much

He's acting menacingly and spreading out of his hood widly like a cobra lol
    That's their knee-jerk reaction

I saw a giganic anaconda was constricting to a croc
    It was a breathtaking performance

    yaw~n

    Beautiful landscapes and incredible snake(s;-D).

I had no idea there was still such lovely, unruined habitat this close to a big city in Japan. Think of all the Kurosawa movies: the ones showing wilderness are all period pieces, the ones taking place in modern times are very urban (think Dodesukaden), crowded cities, speeding bullet trains... So that's my vision of Japan, except maybe up high in the mountains.

Now I want to go there and go on walks to find reptiles like these.

This keelback is a kind of snake I've never heard of - amazing looks.

The anaconda, however is more common. I think we have similar in a park right in my city, maybe not quite so fat. But you can sit on them and have your lunch, they are so tame.

That is certainly not what I expected the landscape of Japan to look like. I pictured more mountains, more rock, less dense forest. Thank you for sharing!

Tokyo is a big city and quite busy city(Not like Dodesukaden lol that's almost the story 50years ago)
and this place where I went to herp is just one hour to go from my house
It is small place, like "air spot" There is an amusement park near by this nature
    So it's quite strange place

No more Samurai around here lol
But thses photos remind you such Samurai movies
Voice of birds and frogs, insects
You will be comfortable being here Come to Japan once

Japan is a small country, but we have got moutains/rocks forests in many places

Well, it makes sense that you are an artist because you have an eye for what looks good and how to frame a shot.
We went hiking at the red rock mountains nature park yesterday but our only finds were little frogs in the stream. LOL Not as exciting as your great finds. But hiking up the creek bed chasing my teenagers keeps my butt from getting too big. haha can you tell this was taken using my crappy phone camera?
