As far as the toxicity of avocados go, the fruit has only been shown to be toxic to some birds. It is in fact used in some dog and cat foods, but people still lean on the side of caution and don't recommend feeding it to anything. The rest of the plant, however, (pit, leaves, skin, etc.) has definitely been shown to be toxic.

Samantha, if you think you can get "large" avocados where you are, you need to head to South America. They have some variants down there where the fruit gets around the size of footballs.

WoW! And I thought our FL avocados were big! I love them, but have never fed them to my animals.

A friend of mine has an avocado tree in his back yard, but unfortunately it only produces itty bitty ones. More work than payoff, ya know?
