I never knew what that was.
I thought that is what it was but never confirmed it. What age to they normally start doing that and why? My oldest started that not to long ago. Will that always happen for the rest of his life?

They do that when they are sexually mature. I would say three...my two year old didn't do it and my four year old does. Yes, they will always do it. Not to sound really gross, but one of my males eats them, so you don't always find them (unless you see him eating them). :O

My Leonidas ( my adult male b/w Tegu ) started doing it when he was close to a year old. My other b/w male just started doing it and we had him since December of 07 and is a bit older than Leonidas. My blue/red hybrid was born in July of 08 and I haven't seen him do it yet.

Sorry to drag up an old post....
my Dezie started dropping plugs at 6 months?? He is a big by at 33". I am pretty sure his age is right on because I bought him as a hatchling from a show with a bunch of babies that were all about 10" in length. So at 6 months can he breed already???

Sexual maturity is a physical trait dependent on size and body changes rather than chronological age. People reach sexual maturity at different ages as well.

Are there any adult male tegus that you never see them evert their hemipenes or leave sperm plugs? If you don't notice them, does that mean there is possibly an abnormaility? Or do some just not leave them. Assuming it is not a case where the owner just did not notice it. Also, I read that some of them just leave them when they defecate/urinate so if that's the case perhaps you don't just see it as it is mixed up in the mess?

Well, my male red tegu eats his sperm plugs and the Colombian's are just kinda mixed up in the mulch. :O I have to say though that I always see the hemipenes when my male tegus and iguana pass waste. When my last male red passed, he was 2.5yo and I had never seen him pass sperm plugs and he everted his hemipenes only occasionally. Maybe it is a maturity issue. All my other male lizards are fully mature.
