I am reposting what Frances (uvguideuk) has been saying. I've never used or seen a SolarGlo, so I don't know what they look like. But I know they are a popular bulb and I wanted users to know about the new results so they could make educated decisions. I really can't advise about switching or taking bulbs back, just wanted to post the new info. In light of the new info, however, I would get a better bulb until I was certain the issue had been resolved. The manufacturer had sent bulbs to Frances for testing, so they are aware of the problem and will likely fix it ASAP. They are a reputable company and sell a lot of product. But it will take time for the inferior bulbs to get off the shelves. Check the coating of the bulb before you buy.

    >The ones I was sent from both the USA and UK, only 8 weeks ago, all have the
    >"outside etch" - a matt, ground-glass exterior. These, I was told, were the new
    >product!

have the results done in the next week or two.
    > > There has been a MAJOR change in this product since about November. This was
confirmed to me by a staff member at Rolf C Hagen UK, the parent company. I was
told they have changed from "hand blown glass" to an automated process. So I am
guessing this requires a different glass composition or thickness..
    > >
    > > I will publish the details as soon as I can, but basically both the 125W and
the 160W now have a very low UVB output indeed. One of the 125W lamps which I
tested, gave me 48uW/cm2 and UVI 1.2 after 30mins, and after 105 hours
burning-in, was only giving me 29uW/cm2 and UVI 0.6.

"The answer to all these important questions is "we don't know yet".
I have tested 4 ExoTerra Solar Glo lamps since March. Two were kindly sent to me
from the USA by a lady named Dawn, who contacted me from the beardeddragon.org
forum, and two were sent to me from Rolf C Hagen UK. All had frosting on the
outside. The 160W lamps were in black-and-silver boxes, the 125W were in
    yellow-and-orange boxes.
Dawn's 125W lamp had a very good UVB output, a very nice lamp. Her 160W had a
much lower output. Both my samples from Hagen had much lower output, too.
Darren's sample was a disaster.... but surely the company would test at least
one lamp for longer than 24 hours to see if it still emmited UVB?..... maybe
there was something wrong with it.
But Darren is sending me a sample of the 125W with the inner coating. He says
these are in black-and-silver boxes too. I'll see if mine dies after 24 hours,
    too!

I therefore have NO idea what ExoTerra are selling anywhere, at the moment.

We will investigate, and report back... that's all we can say for now.
I would suggest anyone with new ExoTerra Solar Glos may need to beg, steal or
borrow a UVB meter. (Well...not steal.)
The older ones were nice little lamps. If you got good ones, keep them. I ran
one successfully for a year, over one of my beardies.

    All the best
    Frances"

    From Laura:
I believe the new bulbs have a new outside frosted coating. If you take a wet finger and slide it across the bulb, you can see through it, it leaves a line. The old bulbs were coated on the inside and would not show any change.

I think I'm going to bring this one back tomorrow and get the one I used to have before. Better save then sorry. Mine does have the frosted coating on the outside. Maybe I can bring the buld to a pet store and they can test it there. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even have a UVB reader.

Could the packaging also give it away..... They changed the look of the packaging probably about 4-5 or more months ago.. It is now in a gray and black box... I am wondering if when they changed the bulb, they changed the packaging.

Rob. I don't know how the box looked like before but this is the one I just bought. I don't know if this is the look of the new or the old box.
