Just be careful with going too slow. I did for a month and a half before getting fed up with the slow method. There's a fine line between letting him get comfortable with you and letting him dictate that you don't get to be near him.

Hi Tegugurl . Welcome to the Tegu forum family and congrats on your new Tegu . What is his name ? I just looked at your album and he is very cute. Your set up sounds good. I do want to ask you what kind of wood the enclosure is made out of ? The cypress mulch is fine. I'm using that, too. It is good to hear that he already ate for you. Some Tegus when they come into a new home take up to a week sometimes to eat something. Have you tried to feed him any frozen/thawed rodents yet ? It's not good if the Tegu eats just raw meat, fruits.... because the stool can be runny for a while and he could get dehydrated. The frozen/thawed rodents are very important. They are also very good in calcium ( that's in their bones ). I would try to handle him a little bit each day. How big is he now ? Here is some info for you to check out if you want to. It's also a lot cheaper to order the rodents from them then getting them from the pet store .Please keep us posted on how he is doing and please feel free to ask us any questions you may have.

Awww. Thank you for the very nice compliment . Lol. Leonidas sure cracked me up that day. I don't know what has gotten into him on those two days. I had him since October of 07 and those are the only two times ( in the videos I posted ) he chased me down like that. I think the one time it was because I had to clean his nose and put some meds on him. Maybe he was just very mad at me lol. I wish I could help you with giving you some taming tips. But I never had to tame down a big Tegu like yours down before. I did it all with my Tegus when they were hatchlings. It would help to see a video of mylnor on how he is acting.

It is important to teach your kids to be very careful around tegus because they can and do bite for no apparent reason. Mine walked up to my roommate one day and bit the tip of her finger. We figure this was probably because she just got done holding her Uromastix and her finger smelled like the small lizard. I have been bitten a few times and both times I believe that it was my fault. one time I ate chicken for dinner and didn't wash my hands with soap before trying to get her out of her cage. She came up to my hand like she usually does to crawl up my arm and get out of her cage but she stopped then smelled my fingers a few times then snapped on faster than I could move it. Another time when she was hiding under her water tub and I wanted her to come out to eat her dinner. She huffed at me a few times as I reached under the dish then bit at my hand. I have learned to always wash my hands with soap before handling my tegu and also to never try to grab at her when she is hiding because this obviously makes tegus feel threatened. If kids are taught to properly handle a tegu they are a good pet. It may also be a good idea to always fed your tegu before they handle it because they are far less likely to bite with a full belly. Just keep in mind that even the tamest tegu in the world can still bite. Have fun taming your tegu! I'm sure you will be amazed by how fast it will calm down.

Your welcome. I'm glad things are going better with him . Try to let his feet rest on your arm or chest when you pick him up. Tegus don't like to have their feet in the air. Leonidas is very tame but since he is so big and I'm kind of little ( my arms are to small for him to rest his feet on there lol ) he whips me pretty good sometimes when I pick him up. As soon as I put him on my chest he stops. I can't wait to see a video of u him . It's also good to feed them after they have been up for a little while. If you wait to long and they are getting to hungry they will bite, too. One time I had to work very late and Leonidas was taking a nap with me. He woke me up by poking his nose on my neck a lot of times. I knew the sign that he was hungry but I was to tiered to get up. Then he started to huff and putt and he was flicking his tounge around a lot. I still didn't get up. I looked at him and told him no not now. Well, I payed the price for it. He looked at me back and then bit me on my lip, chin and neck all in one big bite. This is the first time in over two years that he has done this. But it was my fault.

wow to get bit by leo at that size im sure it hurt a bet...yeah i usualy let him bask for alittle bit before i feed him so that he can warm up and wake up alittle more...this morning i called out his name to wake him up and he came out of his burrow and went under his basking light. so maybe that is a good sign i hope...i love it when he first wakes up and goes to his basking spot he just spread way out and lays there like"awwwwww thats so warmmmmmmm" lol

Yes, it did. But I can't be mad at him since it was my fault for ignoring him.
Awww. This is so cute that he came out when you called his name. Big progress . I like it, too, when they stretch out like that. My boyfriend likes it kind of cool in the house. So when I see the Tegus stretch out like that and bask I wish I could go in there and bask with them lol. They look so relaxed when they do that.
