just keep in mind no bigger around then the lizards head. & when it gets older you have to feed larger mice/rats and even chicks/quail.
you can also get feeder fish (in NY we have bait fish (that are checked to be parasite/disease free) & i have a local pet shop that sell them from chemical free tanks.

If the problem your Mom has with feeding whole prey items is the fact that they're alive, then you can assure her that it's actually BETTER for your tegu to eat prey that has been pre-killed and frozen (you then thaw them out yourself). This is a GREAT site to get all of your frozen-thawed feeders:

oo i just got somthing called a repti fogger to keep up his humidity casue it was down to 50% and i couldent keep it up hehe so i bought that and distilled water

lol i turned it up to high at first n his humidity was at 83 lol it flooded the cheap thermometer and the humidity gage lol i gota buy a new one today a water proof one lol
